私が初めてカシミールへ足を運んだのは1999年のことで当時は戦争中でした。それ以来、私はこの地に興味を抱くようになり、状況を記録するためにいつかまたここに戻りたいと思っていました。
2009年になってようやく再びこの地を踏むことができ一ヶ月ほど滞在しました。カシミールの現実を理解するには時間と聞き分けの良い耳が必要です。
人はいわゆるビッグニュースに気を取られ、些細なニュースを見過ごしてしまいがちです。私の興味はそれと全く反対で、現地の人々と知り合い、そして彼らの日々の営みを記録してみたいと考えました。
ゴーラムに会ったのは偶然でした。彼は新聞配達をしていて、人生を夢中で生きていました。ポリオに感染していたにも関わらず彼はその障害にも悲観的になることはありませんでした。二つの仕事をかけもちし、結婚して子供もいました。そして彼は「ジャム・カシミール障害者、未亡人、老人の会」の代表も務めていたのです。彼の力強い意志と性格に私は心を打たれました。彼から、人間が困難に直面した時に出す底力を知ることが出来ました。インド・パキスタン間の問題を解決するにはお互いの共通言語を見出す努力をしていく必要があります。住民は、途方もないスケールの他の誰かのゲームの巻き添えになっているだけなのです。

I went to Kashmir for the first time in1999. There was a war going on. Ever since I became interested in this part ofthe world and wanted to go back to document thesituation.Finally in 2009 I was able to travel there andstayed for about a month. It takes time and good ears to understand the realityof Kashmir.People tend to be interested in the bignews and overlook the small ones. For me is the opposite. I wanted to get toknow the people and document their everyday lives.I met Gholum by chance while he wasdelivering the newspapers and became engrossed in his life. Although hecontracted polio he didnot linger on his disability.He has two jobs, he is married withchildren and he is the president of the "All Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped, widows and old ageassociation." I was touched by his strong will andcharacter. People like him show me the resilience of the human race in times ofdifficulty. India and Pakistan still need to find acommon language to solve their problems. The locals are caught in the middle ofthis Gargantuan game.
