　僕が新宿を撮り始めたのは学生の頃だった。コマ劇場前の広場には尾崎豊や長淵剛を歌う若者がひしめきあっていた。新宿通りの歩行者天国も様々な表現活動をするものが沢山いた。どこもそのような活動は禁止となり、震災の影響もあってか街のエネルギーが弱くなったような気がした。僕が中年になったからなのか分からないが今の若者がエネルギーをもてあましているような気がする。

I was a student when I started shooting Shinjuku. The plaza in front of Koma Theatre was always packed with young people singing the songs by Yutaka Ozaki and Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi.  All traffic was blocked on Shinjuku Dori and there were people doing various activities of self-expressions. Such activities have been banned everywhere now and perhaps it may be due to the Earthquake that took place earlier this year, but I feel as though the energy of the city has weakened.  I don't know if this is because I am now a middle-aged man, but it seems to me that young people have too much energy without knowing what to do with it.
