No. 461: 73.5 kilos, minus 70yen, reason for the rank-down - testicles attached...No. 462: 72 kilos, No. 463:82 kilos minus 40 yen, reason for the rank-down - oversize.......

These are the body weight measurements of piggies with approximately 110 kilos after dissecting head, wrists, ankles, skin and organs.
These numbers are multipliedby the market price and sales prices are determined.  The numbers are marked in invoices issued by wholesaler and market and I carefully input the product sales amount on a computer.
It is easy to forget that up until just a few days ago, those pigs were eating food, fighting with other pigs in the same pen, taking a nap while mingling with others, trying to suck on other pig's nipples in search of mother's warmth, feeling the summer heat of just the other day, feeling the beginning of autumn, feeling pain when hit, feeling happiness when petted.
Sometimes this notion strikes me really hard.
There are times when we receive notifications that some pigs had died by being crushed by others on the way to slaughter house, or when inspectors find out that some pigs had been infected with disease.
They probably have suffered from agony or sadness, being shaken on a truck, feeling lonely in unfamiliar place, how long have you been sick? Have you been in pain or suffering all the time?
These thoughts always make me blue.
I also feel so sad that they died without becoming meat products.
I don't know if this is because I think of it as their fate to become meat product...
I think a part of me thinks that, but at the same time, I am, or at least apart of me is, against such attitude.

Those lives are born and raised to become food and I grew up surrounded by such lives, but I still cannot fully digest it.
"Pigs know that they willbe shipped", a farmer once said to me.  Once the pigs become large enough and are ready to be shipped, they are marked with spray and they will be loaded on a truck soon enough.
